Real Darren: I’m looking into a mirror image of myself to ask a few questions about the new musical comedy drama I AM DESTiNY. Tell me, what is this work about?
Mirror image Darren: Set in present day Australia, this is the tale of a woman isolated in a quarantine hospital cell for the past five years. She had been subjected to illegal and dangerous experiments in an attempt to find a cure to an unspecified virus. In all that time she has never uttered a single word...until today. Her lonely world becomes filled with revelations on what had become of her 3 estranged daughters Aria, Cadence and Bella.
Aria, once a child prodigy has been trapped in a troubled marriage.
Cadence, a self centred talent-less actress becomes the accidental star of a TV show (all the while ruining her boyfriend’s career)
and Bella, the youngest daughter was kidnapped as a child never to be seen again. This in turn prompted the downward spiral of her mother and sisters. What became of Bella? Come to the theatre and find out.
Real Darren: What was the initial inspiration for this work?
Mirror image Darren: I wanted to explore the ancient Greek myth regarding Destiny and her 3 daughters (AKA “the Fates”) each of whom were assigned individual destinies for mortals. As the work developed it became more about a mother separated from her 3 daughters, the regrets and the innate bond between a mother and child. I wanted to use structural techniques I haven’t tried before and incorporate more musical and operatic elements.
Real Darren: Your previous work PURGATORY premiered last year with the Maleny Players. What’s the difference between the 2 works?
Mirror image Darren: Both works are dark comedy drama horror musical fantasies based on reality and actual events. PUGATORY was more about observations whereas I AM DESTiNY explores and tugs at our emotions…or at least when we’re not laughing.
Real Darren: Tell me about the cast.
Mirror image Darren: 14 talented actors from across the Sunshine Coast provide virtuoso performances as larger than life characters. As in previous productions every performer has their moment in the spotlight.
