HEDDA GABLER

Hedda Gabler is newly married and bored. Hedda doesn’t want a husband, his name or the stifling constraints of societal expectation. But in the 19th century, independence in a woman is unthinkable. Hedda has tasted life and is not willing to be controlled, but domesticity now has her firmly in its grasp. Like a canary in its cage sucking in poison down the choking mineshaft, Hedda Gabler is going to dice with those around her and amusedly watch the dangerous cascade of events unfold, until the walls cave in.

Hedda Gabler has been hailed as a dramatic masterpiece. Encompassing literary realism from the famous pen of Henrik Ibsen, it was ahead of its time. It explored core issues of power, control, and societal expectation in the 19th century, but controversially portrayed a woman as a feminist and an anti-hero, both shocking at the time.

Performance season – 18-27 October at The Playhouse.
